"DD Returns" is a Tamil horror-comedy that successfully rejuvenates the genre with its tight writing and uproarious screenplay. The story introduces us to Inspector Aarti, who accidentally causes the death of an innocent young man while pursuing a notorious gangster, Daas. Simultaneously, three aspiring filmmakers encounter bizarre situations after inhaling a dangerous substance. These seemingly unrelated events lead to a series of peculiar occurrences, revealing the escape of a young girl from a mental asylum.

DD Returns Review:

In an era where horror comedies often miss the mark, “DD Returns” stands out as a delightful exception. This Tamil film masterfully combines the horror and comedy genres, delivering a tightly written, engaging screenplay that keeps the audience laughing from start to finish. With its clever execution and well-staged comic sequences, “DD Returns” offers a refreshing and genuinely funny cinematic experience.

A Deadly Game Unveiled:

The film kicks off with a spine-tingling introduction to a lethal game called “Win or Run,” where contestants face brutal consequences for failure. However, the organizers of this deadly game meet their end at the hands of villagers, leaving their vengeful ghosts to haunt a vintage French palace.

We are then introduced to Sathish, portrayed by Santhanam, an event manager desperately seeking to resolve his girlfriend’s predicament. His discovery of a large sum of stolen money sets the stage for a series of comical misadventures. Sathish’s journey leads him to the haunted palace, where he and his team are compelled to participate in a perilous game orchestrated by the resident ghosts. The question looms: can Sathish and his girlfriend emerge victorious and escape the clutches of the supernatural?

Comedy Done Right:

What sets “DD Returns” apart from the multitude of failed attempts in the genre is its impeccable execution of comedic sequences. The film strikes a perfect balance between craziness and humor, steering clear of the cringe-worthy pitfalls that plague many horror comedies. While the initial moments introduce an array of characters and raise doubts about the film’s direction, director Prem Anand skillfully transforms the narrative into an uproarious and enjoyable experience, maintaining the hilarity until the credits roll.

A Thrilling Second Half:

Following a well-structured setup in the first half, “DD Returns” shifts into high gear in the second half. The game “Win or Run” takes center stage, featuring four levels, each with its unique challenges, providing ample opportunities for clever and hilarious gags. The film also incorporates contemporary references, drawing inspiration from popular trends like Squid Game and YouTube videos.

Santhanam, leading an ensemble cast, shines brightly with his impeccable delivery of one-liners that consistently hit the mark. He effortlessly navigates subtle heroic moments, endearing himself to the audience. The supporting cast, including Surbhi, Redin Kingsley, Pradeep Rawat, Munishkanth, and Mottai Rajendran, deliver outstanding performances, contributing to the film’s comedic brilliance. Masoom Shankar’s role evolves into a pivotal one as the story progresses, and she performs admirably.

Trivia

  • In "DD Returns," the film pays homage to the popular South Korean series "Squid Game" by incorporating elements from the show into the narrative. This creative nod to a global sensation adds an extra layer of humor and relatability for viewers familiar with "Squid Game."

Goofs

  • During a pivotal scene involving a chase sequence in the haunted palace, there is a noticeable continuity error. In one shot, a character's jacket is shown to be soaked with water, but in the subsequent shot, the jacket is inexplicably dry. This inconsistency momentarily disrupts the continuity of the suspenseful moment, drawing attention away from the action.
